At right is a picture of an aged three-tab shingle with its fatal flaw, weathered through where the overlapping shingle's gap sat. For reference, one current manufacturer offers a 5 year warranty on their Marathon (3-tab) shingle. This is only 1/3 of the 15 year "iron clad" warranty offered for IKO Cambridge and Dynasty shingles, and says a lot about what shingle manufacturers think about the longevity of the 3-tab style. One more bit of trivia that some customers might find interesting, 25-30 years ago, 25 year shingles actually did usually last more than 20 years. It was only in the past 15-20 years that the quality of the 3-tab shingle fell off a cliff, as manufacturers switched their product lines over to the architectural/laminate/"lifetime" shingles. We guess 3-tabs just were no longer a priority. We still use the Marathon 3-tab shingles for ridge on many houses, but because of the nature of ridge shingles, these are usually the last shingles to wear out, so they do not affect the lifespan of a Cambridge or Dynasty roof.
Plywood leaks
This picture shows the hidden damage that occurs to the roof deck when a roof system is allowing water penetration. Fortunately, plywood replacement is a normal part of roof replacement and repair and the good news is that only the sheets that have suffered damage have to be replaced. Sometimes just a portion of the plywood deck, for instance the bottom two feet, has to be replaced. A deteriorating roof that allows water through poses risks of a damp attic and the attendant possibility of mould and ceiling leaks.
Quinn Exterior’s roof installers find all sorts of interesting things under a shingle or steel roof. Here is an example of a poor patch job with the goal of speed rather than quality or roof system integrity. Quinn’s installers take pictures of every job to document the before condition and the progress and completion of the work.
