Steel
Q. Will Quinn Exteriors Install Steel over old shingles or strapping?
A. For residential dwellings, we recommend against installing steel over existing shingles. Our method involves removing all existing roofing materials, installing a complete premium high temperature ice and water coverage across the roof surface, then installing the steel.
Essentially, with our method the steel is protecting the ice and water, which is the final defence against water infiltration. The ice and water seals itself around the threads of every screw holding the steel. Steel allows for a lot of condensation and frost to form that doesn't occur with a shingle roof, and so if steel is installed onto horizontal strapping over existing shingles, this will lead to a gradual deterioration of the strapping over time, as well as eventual water infiltration as the water and ice work at the holes around the nails or screws holding the strapping.
Q. What kind of steel do you use most often?
